happy spring break!

My time wasting on Tumblr has finally decreased a bit. I collect abstract art work on line but I need to make more collages, paint, and draw. No excuses. I feel much better when I create something, mostly for myself. But I'll put something up on my tumblr diary just to see if people will like this or that. There are different audience for different places, what you might call a vibe. Flickr people like different things then the tumblr crowd. I put mostly abstract photography stuff and that goes over well.

Yesterday was so sunny. So I just drove up to NE Killingsworth to check out a messenger bag at Half Pint Vintage store which has cool boots, bags, and belt. Mostly leather. I bought the bag for $38 bugs. My brother thought we all should check out Yakuza near by for pre diner treats. The have really trendy good food and thick hamburger served rare only. The back yard seating was really nice. We walked around afterwards and found the vintage store where I had my eye on the bag. It has working clips not like the fake buttons that attaches to flaps you see now a days. The leather is trimmed and a bit scratched and stained but clean. It shows a nice patina. Because Yakuza was closed on Sunday, I headed to Cup and Saucer Cafe. I had a salad because it was too hot for anything else and because I frankly don't get enough of salads these days. I remember when we were in Hungary, the person from Pennsylvania made a list of all the salads that he was going to eat when he get back to his state. Hungary has lots of good food but at our area, there were lots of game meat and pizza but not much of American salad. There was vitamin salad which to him was not the same. He craved summer salad as I do. Not that Eastern Europeans don't have salads. A memorable salad I had was in Poland, Poznan. It was in a fancy restaurant. The tomato was peeled. That was a memorable detail. I've not had a salad like that ever since.

Your wondering why I'm bragging about travels to Poland and Hungary? Well to tell you the truth. I don't travel much these days. The Hungary trip was in 2001, the summer before the 9/11. I carried so much stuff on that trip it was unbelievable. I had a metal trip pod, an old Mamiya C330 medium format camera. For those of you who don't know what a medium format camera is, it's a film camera which has negatives three or four times bigger the 35mm film. In mega pixels, it's probably some 20 to 40 mega pixels, two or four times the average digital point and shoot. I don't recommend carrying anything like that. I was able to take a dozen good shots. Believe it or not, some people prefer to carry film gears because, with digital gear, you have to carry the charger, laptop, and a few other equipment to make it work. Although, I did travel to NY last September with a laptop, a serious compact camera Panasonic Lumix GF1. It was bought for the trip. I dropped it once at the Apple store in Tribecca and just the other night, dropped it on the wooden stair at my sister's house. It went tumbling down a few steps but works just fine. There is a dent at the corner of the camera which mark it as mine. Althought, the viewing screen is dark sometimes, I think it is due to the drop. It goes dark only when I turn it vertically for the vertical shots.

If I'm ambitious and have time, I like to put together something about photography and travel.

The Mexican Suitcase

I spent nearly the whole afternoon looking at the rare first exhibit of : http://www.icp.org/museum/exhibitions. The Mexican Suitcase looks like a homemade box of card board with cordoned space that held rolled up 35mm film negatives. This was also in conjunction to the Cuban Revolution with many rare Che contact sheets. There is a Netflix film about how the famous iconic Che portrait arrived. Both shows displayed contact sheets along with the famous prints. The Mexican Suitcase has more contact sheets. I had not seen any contact sheets at all in a museum. It was good to see that the pros also had over exposed or rough shots before they nailed it.

The Scout made a second video on craftsmanship. This one features Roman & Williams. I really like the way they have documents some of their renovation projects on the blog. There are pictures of bricks being laid, photographs of the fixtures along side with shop drawings. In this computer age, it's refreshing to see hand drawings instead of slick CG. I also think that they have chosen to use Blogger to show case their work instead of a flash or highly coded website. It's really using simple tools that are familiar to new exciting ways. A blogging tool has been transformed into a cascading sections to show news, goods, and projects.

Tonight I went to see two different works. Jame Lavadour and Julia Mangold. The galleries, PDX Contemporary and Elizabeth Leach, were next to each other. Their works are different and also similar. Lavadour's abstract landscapes seems like a shamanic vision after a strong peyote trip. The vast spaces created with a subtle mix of bright color that are layered with pure neon unmixed colors and lines. The toxic color seems to have flatten the space and yet adds depth because of the layering. Some of the pieces are explosions from a volcano against the misty haze of distant land. There are sharp depth of field and jagged mountains. The shapes seems to come purer in it's abstraction where as a realistic or photographic depiction of the landscape would have organically rounded off the geometries. Despite the strong tone, the whole body of work seems to stay with a certain strong palette. A comparison could be made to Cezanne's cubist rendering of the landscape, reducing the mountain mass into flatten shapes. Cezanne's landscapes are more cubic then Lavadors. If Julia Mangold painted a landscape, it would be more a keen to Cezanne then Lavadour.

Then there is the austere work of Julia Mangold. She stays with in a certain tone yet still manage to produce an illusion of space. Her palette is black against the gallery's white wall. Her work contains a certain purity and religious tones. Her vision is also shamanic, though more hermetic and monastic, less gregarious then Lavadour's, though no less powerful. The work hungs on the wall as sculpture and painting at the same time. The more successful compositions are the pure square, almost cubes. Lavadour's forms and lines are organic becoming geometric and Julia Mangolds forms are geometric becoming organic. The lights cast ghostly shadows, light grays angels beneath the cube pieces hanging on the wall. Lavadors are panels that protrude slightly off the wall where as Julia's form extend from the wall and into the space of the viewer and room. In a way, Lavadour's work is minimal and flat. There are few colors within the painting and few shapes in the volcabulary. These issues, these tools are more distinct in Julia's work. Julia also has some pieces that are on a flat plane. They too are dimensionally projecting. The layers of transparency and space is perhaps most similar to Lavadour's paintings. They seem to be layers up on layers of vellum sheets, the top sheet has a slight curve at the top that shows how the pieces were constructed. They are also restricted to pure platonic shapes, like her sculptures. Their layering seems more apparent and constructed where as Lavadour's veils are hazing the mountain peaks beyond in mists. Lavadour rejoice in the un-ruliness, Julia reveal in the restraint.

The volumes bisected by the white lines that are between the rectangular shapes. Their forms create another shape casted by the gallery light. There are groupings of three square. Each is carefully constructed to bring out the proportions. For example, the smaller square groups has more depth and become more cube like in their volumes while the larger square groupings have flatter depth. This choice seems to be congruent with the way we perceive space and how we measure our body against the work. There were more obvious sculptural pieces as objects on the floor. The volumes, boxes lay flush against each other at times and then protrude no more then half an inch beyond each other. There seems to be a game, a consistency. For example, the horizontal lines between the space of the wall pieces are less then half an inch. There are limitations in dimension to create implied lines. The vertical wall pieces seem less successful and radically different from the implied square. It's not the unruliness's of the dimension that makes them alien to the square composition, it's their departure from the square that creates such a jarring affect. Though they are of the same color of black that unites the pieces, it is the geometry that makes them different and seem to belong to another artist. In the back of the gallery are the prints of Donald Judd. Only two are in black and white. Though they are lines, the black and white twins demonstrate the minimalist technique of varying only a few lines to make a slight but totally different space. It is no accident that the two are shown together. Julia works in the same line as Judd and even her last name Mangold recalls another minimalist, Robert Mangold. I shook her hands but did not ask her if she is related to Robert. Her work certainly carries the line and field color of Robert in shape but not color. It reminds me of Frank Stella's black and white prints and his radical departure in sculpture of metallic french curves protruding from the wall. I would have expected Frank Stella's work to be more like Julia's work if he carried on the same black and white palette and remain pure in his geometry of linear lines and rectangular shapes. Julia's work is a ghost of Donald Judd and Frank Stella. She carries on their tradition and I almost prefer her work to her fore bears, the masters of minimalist. Judd's work is sometimes too pure, dare I say boring, where as Julia's work allows a range of visual games to engage the viewers. Her work recalls another minimalist, Ann Truitt. Not long ago, I saw Truitt's column piece at the Portland Art Museum's Disquieted show. It is a column, an extended cube. In height, it is about the size of a woman. It is perfectly executed, like Julia's work. However, Julia's vertical pieces pales in comparison. If only Truitt's column were black, they would belong in the show as a mother watching over her children, Julia's child, playing quietly, sneakily protruding from each other on the wall and on the floor.

It's a slim volume compare to the Kolo Album that I put together of the images. I think both serve a different purpose. I think that the book would be a great item for corporate events and a Kolo Album would be better for personal events such as an engagement.

I like how riviera clothing put together their website which is in form of a book. The clean photographs, bright lights capture California. The font and lay out of both the website and book has a personal feel to it and has a simple concept. I really see it as a hard cover book. I wish that my blurb book could be previewed like this book. I could easily imagined this website virtual book as a real book and would want to received their catalogue.

I really like how Gabriel uses photography in his notebooks. He uses a common ballpoint and writes in ideas, thoughts, and observations in an organized block, like comic book or architectural handwriting. He uses a 35mm camera and a point and shoot then has the rolls printed in 4x6. Here's an artist using photography as a medium sometimes and using it as a sketch book. The Pleasures of the Text began as my curiosity of there the reader's mind goes when he/she is lost in a book. It is the same look that video games have? That concentrated gaze. When some one is lost in a book, it's hard to get their attention. It makes photographing them a bit easier as they are not aware of anything other then the book that engages them. In this high tech culture, the printed page is vanishing. I foundly remember the bookstores I frequent at lunch time which no longer exist today and marvel at the places that still survive. I regret not documenting these places before they disappeared. Some places still have high ceilings and floods of light into the skylight. Other places are dark and dingy and seem to represent that part of our brain.

2010 begins a new decade and the new symbol. The idea began when I saw Borge's Dreamtigers at a bookstore after the new years. I had seen certain images of the tiger pasted to my bedroom wall as a child and I regard it as protection. I had been told my my parents that when we sleep, our soul being becomes an animal and roam the landscape of dreams. I believe that we became our Zodiac counter part, our doppleganger. It was believe that the face of the dreamer would not be distrubed or deface because the dream counter part would not be able to recognize the host upon it's return. The realm of sleep and dream is sacred. TThis is the reason why pictures of people sleeping is frown upon. I was looking at the color and symbols of Red, the Chinese red. At the time, I was looking at images with the color red as symbols of love. I had an idea for a while of gathering all of the images that I had taken that has something to do with Asian and the Asian culture. Part of it seems that I have fallen into the same cliche and stereo types. It might be a mirror that reflects my own prejudices and preferences.

Okay where to start? First Friday is a great art scene in the SE part of Portland. I was at the 23 Sandy for the artist reception. The place was packed. I got to see my friends and my teacher!
I stood near my image 'Indian Point' to answer questions. Near me stood Josh Hobson's and his image "Coming, Going, Coming."
I asked Josh where that was taken and when he said 'Can Tho', I could not believe my ears. That's where I grew up I tell Josh this. Josh was listed as a non-portland artist because he was just a few weeks ago. His picture arrived in Portland before he did. Josh had travel with his wife in Vietnam and Korea (to teach English). Portland has welcomed Josh in a big way because his other image is showing at the same time at the NewSpace Center for photography. (The show is call Carnival.)

I had to show Chris Bennett's picture: 'View from Hart Mountain'. I thought it was quiet a coincident and thought I make a post of it. The show will be on until the end of February.

This February's First Thursday I'll be hanging out at 23 Sandy Gallery. The gallery is hanging the ND10 Down & Out show that moved from the Wallspace the previous month. What a great way to start of the new year. There are four of us out of 42 photographers that are from Portland, Oregon. Here are the four Portland Photographers: Chris Bennett, Heidi Bertman, Duc Ly, and Jeff Krolick. Jeff's work has been feature in many place, Jen Bekman's gallery is one of them. Chris, I believe is the Director of Newspace Center in Portland SE studio, which I've been using for studio photography. I look forward to meeting these talented photographers. I'm a bit star struck, particularly because I've seen Alejandro Cartagena's Fragmented Cities, Santa Catarina. His work has been selected for Hey Hot Shots, and few others that I've missed. Pausetobegin.com has an interview with Alejandro and other photographers.

Jeff Antebi.com has been doing some very powerful work in Haiti before the earthquake.

I've looked at there work recently on the websites and admire their approach.

Indian Point

Over this last summer of 2009, I've been going on a lot of hikes along the Columbia River Gorge region between Oregon and Washington forests and mountains. I go with my friends who are expert hikers. They are my guides. They have seen incredible views of St. Helen, and other Colorado range. I'm always amazed that they rarely photograph the views. I climb the hills for the views. I've been lead up to Indian Point's secret spot. Some of the trails are hidden like this particular spot of Indian Point where I took this photograph. I gaze down and out towards the mighty Columbia River. My guides points to the opposite side of the River to Dog Mountain's peak. The ground below has signs of modern industries, cars, and damns. There are signs that the landscape is changing. I try to imagine the time when the Native Americans looked out to these majestic land before industrialization. These are some of the most sacred spots. On Silver Star Mountain trails, there is a path through huckleberry berries and brambles which leads to a sacred spot. The Native Americans build a shallow pit made of rocks. The initiate will then lay in the pit for a day perhaps night and wait for a vision. For me, the hike is a meditation of breaths, and exhaustion of body and mind. I carry my problems with me in my head and try to unpack them along the way, to work them out and wait for insights. Dropping a problem here and there and picking up new vision, insights and preserve them in my camera. I always carry a camera or two with me on these excursions. The images show a privilege view and make my physical exertion worthwhile. I carry these visions to the flat land and share them with my friends. I'm always proud of them and know that someday I won't be able to climb any more and will be glad to have the hard earned views. Photography allows me to capture the vision, a modern invention to express what has always been inside for those who choose not to share.

Well, I think it’s a brillian idea. The sensor should be coupled with the lens. It makes sense if it’s going to be digital. The sensor won’t get dirty this way. The bw back is a nice idea. The leading companies like Leica, Canon, and Nikon have a legend of lense that seems to hold back camera designs. The Leica M9 is a good example. Ricoh has some heritage in older equipements but is not hold back by it. In the future when sensors improved, the body still works and if you want to shoot with older sensor for a retro look that’s cool too. It’s like going back to the film cameras of the 80s or 70s.

In fact this should have been the very first design of the digital camera because as we see the sensor technology has improved increasingly, this would have save us some money and let us upgrade only the lens and sensor and allow us to get used to the body and it’s menus and buttons. It seem a little bit too late in the game because sensors are so superb now. Ideally, the new camera should have interchangable sensor separte from body and lens like a Hasselblad. This is when it’s possible to shoot with a 50’s Hasselblad with the new digital back. It’s a good start to move away from film based camera of the SLR. But this move seems like it could harken back to the medium format cameras.

I would think that the next progression it for an interchangable sensor. It doesn’t seem far fetch. It makes sense to have the body separated because the digital technology has maxed out at 3 inch for the display screen. Any bigger would be bulky and 3 inches seems the right size to view images.

The digital view finder also flips to 90 degrees which is like the medium format style of shooting at waist level.

I asked her if I could take the photograph. She thought I wanted to make a portrait. I just wanted to photograph her hands and the way she held those apples. She said these are bad apples and that they are to be thrown away. She began to fix her hair. Then decided to put the other hand with this one.

Serious Compact Cameras

I like Leica a lot! This particular model Leica L Lux 3 is compact. Panasonic makes a cheaper (Panasonic Lumix LX3 and FX37) type using Leica's lens. I still think Leica has the best lens all around. The Leica L Lux 4 is a little bigger and pricer but probably what I would go for because I like bigger camera.
There are so many cool cameras out right now for compacts, I think it will rule the market. I prefer these to the bigger DSLR.
I have been looking at the Canon G series. The G10 was a year ago is replaced by the Canon G11. $500 but not as compact or pocketable.
But my new fave is the micro four thirds with interchangable lens.

and Olympus digital Pen $900
My first two digital cameras are from Panasonic with Leica lens. The LC1
has an amazing full size Leica Lens on it.
I think the Leica L Lux 3 is a very good compact. I would not hesitate to get it at $350 price. The name Leica is stylish and fashionable and the quality is very good.

I have a Panasonic Lumix LC1. The body is bigger then the G1. I find the proportions of the Digital cameras are all off! Maybe it's because in film camera, the chambers dictate the shape...form follows function. The digital camera like the G10 feels small. Why can't they just make a digital g1 or g2?

Camera quest: trying to get a fast xD type H card is not easy. I called around the usual suspects but non had it. A search on google shows Overstock had it for $25. The only other place is on EBay for $57. I almost ordered it but I did not. I'm glad I searched Google for the best price.

I bought this camera at a goodwill auction for a very good low price. This is an alternative to the more expensive f1.4 lens. This is my fastest lens in my collection. The meter works great.

Lives of the Artists

This book confirmed that Richard Serra is a total Dick head. And I mean that as a compliment to the author for making it obvious in each paragraph. If you are a great artist you too can get away with this The title borrows from the classic Giorgio Vasari's 'Lives of the Artist'. Tomkins work allows him intimate access to the house and studios of these fine artists. The writing seems less serious then Vasari's. I attempt to read it long ago but it proved to be a snooze-fest. Perhaps I'll try to read it again.
Dare I say that Tomkins work is more 'Chatty' meaning less formal compare to Vasari but that's the times that these artists live in. What was not consider as art during Vasari's time is now art. For example, Serra's empty steel cages with objects in them. New materials have arrived since then such as tires, rubbers, and Core Ten steel. While Johns goes back to the ancient's method of Encaustic, his subject matter is contemporary: maps, arabic numbers, and targets. So to say that the writing is 'Chatty' is not a total loss. It probably adds to the tone. What is art criticism or art reportage now a days when the colloquialism of the blogs attempts to respond to works of art and to get a closer glimpse into the mysterious workings of the artist.

Reading about James Turrel's work in Ganzfeld. It made me realize that artist like Turrel is trying to make us realize that we put together the world through our perceptions. It is our blue sky. The perception of space is oriented within relations to other visual clues.

A Box of Matches

I like the cover concept of this book. This has been on my radar for a long time now. I'm starting to read it. Lately, I wanted to sellect short books that I could finish and feel accomplished. It's a slim volumn. Hearth and home, that has been the archetypal image of dwelling that goes back to the time of cave dwellers and the discovery of fire. The fire place is becoming rarer. I don't have a real wood fire place. Reading this book make you yearn for a fire place, a place to contemplate and meditate before the real world invades. It seems to be the perfect place to do the The morning page as assigned by Dorothea Brande in a book call 'Becoming a Writer'. I had an image of the narrator, diarist using a fountain pen and handwriting his thoughts on paper but I was a little dissappointed that Emmet wrote on a half open old laptop. He did this partly because he did not want to turn on the electric light. He is careful to keep the modern world at bay, waiting for the sun to rise. He makes coffee in darkness and fumbles around in dimness. The descriptions of blind navigation is amusing. [book:Becoming a Writer76788]

Vietnam A book of Changes

This image is a good example of how photographers have great eyes for story telling. It has a pop art feel to it because of the repeated imagery, like Andy Warhol's portrait of Chairman Mao. The other similarity is the iconography of the subject mater. Since it is a bust, it has that Roman classicism to it. It's interesting that I find capitalism in the way the art is presented. Warhol's pop method elevated our taste for consumerism and fame. He put it on the same level of art. It is a new art form. I like how each sucessive image is reveal and how the news paper wrapped around the bust seem to convey the passage of time and also to herald in the news of the day, the change of regime and the impact that it will have on the land. I do remember the requirement to have a picture of Ho Chi Ming on the wall of every house hold. This idea was borrowed from Chairman Mao. In the essay, Mitch mention how much change he saw on the subsequent trips Vietnam. These pictures were made over a long period of time during the 1990s. It is my favorite image of the whole book.

The camera is Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC1. What ever happened to the days of simple camera names like Leica M3, M4 etc. For simplicity's sake, I will call it the LC1. This camera has the Leica lens. There is a bit of troublesome dust spot which needs to be fixed. I did not see this problem until after the trip. I have to remember to be better prepared with equipments. The LC1 is light weigh and has manual switches and buttons to make adjusting the camera easier. It's like the old cameras, I don't have to dig through the manuals to find the functions. It has a 28mm lens for wide open shots of the landscape. Although, I think it does distorts the picture a bit.

I had the circuit board replaced for free by Panasonic because of the Sony Sensor problem. I'm enjoying the camera's shots much more now. It takes fantastic pictures, good color rendition in day light. However, there's a dust spot appearing in the sky shots.

May 24, 2009 Sunday around Memorial Day Weekend.

We left the city by 9am and arrived to a full parking lot already on this beautiful Sunday of Memorial Weekend. The trail head , somewhere near the Bridge of the Gods and Char Burger. We anticipate the carpet of yellow flowers around May which by August had died.

It has been four or five years since we last went up to Dog Mountain. I was younger and in maybe better shape. I don't remember the hike being this hard to walk up. Right off the begining, the climb is steep, worse then stairs. There is a series of switch backs. Today, the narrow path is like a highway with dogs, and humans passing opposite and from behind me. I did not stop, I just walk slowly. If I stopped at the beginning, the climb might be hard the rest of the way up. I had to push no at the beginning to set the pace, the tone of the hike. The yellow carpet of flowers would be the pay off. The gorgeous views would be there waiting.

There are plenty of dog at Dog Moutain. This one seems very regal. Man's best friend is also useful for caring water and other essentials.
